Spirulina algae or spirulina plantensis has the appearance of a polycellular thread which twists helically. It is not labelled as a plant but as bacteria. Chlorella alga has a kind of anti-radiation effect. In 1973, Japanese doctor Ichimura discovered -while testing it on animals- that giving them 8 grams of chlorella per day, the discharge of cadmium (radioactive material) increased in their bodies.
This alga thrives in Western Europe's crystal clear waters of high mineral content. It has been considered a plant since the 19th century. The living alga is red, however, after it has dried, it turns white. It grows very slowly, only 1 milimeter per year. The micro-alga is rich in calcium, more than 34% of its composition is natural pure calcium. In addition, it is very rich in magnesium, iron and other trace elements such as zinc, cobalt, iodine and selenium.

Micro-alga Haematococcus Pluvialis produces the largest quantity of astaxanthin in nature. This freshwater alga is approximately 0.1 mm. It belongs to the family of green algae. During strong solar radiation or nutrient deficiencies, it goes into a resting state and becomes blood red. The main reason of the red color is the astaxanthin carotenoid which was identified in 1944 by English biochemist Tisher. Later, natural astaxanthin became known as ˝the world's most powerful antioxidant.˝

Astaxanthin production is a natural reaction induced by environmental stress effects. Thanks to its protection functions, this algae is able to survive without food or water for 40 years. Parker was the first who used the term probotic in 1974 for organisms and substances responsible for the balance of intestinal tract. The characteristiscs of probiotics are: human origin, non-pathogenic, resistant to the digestive effects of gastric acid, bile, saliva, pancreatic and intestinal fluids. They retain their resilience in food shelf life and technological processes. In addition, probiotics are capable of adhering to mucosal cells, have antimicrobial activity against potential pathogens, and reduce the adherence of pathogenic microbes to the mucosal surface. Probiotics are mostly lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. Most of the best-known probiotic lactic acid bacteria strains are Lactobacillus, smaller portion is Streptococcus genus. Prebiotics are natural nutrients, that are the sole nutrients of probiotics therefore promote their reproduction and prevalance. In the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract, the digestive enzymes do not break down the prebiotics and thus can reach the large intestine undigested. Prebiotics are dietary fibers, but water-soluble, therefore one of the best dietary fibers.
